oops ...... I forgot this part "I'm not sure what performance criteria the M9 outshined the others at." I believe the main criteria was mean rounds between malfunctions. Something along those lines. Feel free to quote me on that ...... just make sure you dont use my name.

For the 9milly sidearms I'd vote the Glock 17 for capacity, reliability and 'film status' appearance. The Beretta 92FS may look good in movies (espicially John Woo directed) but in US Army service has been disappointing- to wide to grip, poor magazine springs and breakage. SiG 226 is also great if one can PAY for it.

I carry a Glock 17 - we have a pretty good permit system in my state. I like it because it's light and fits my small hand well. The polymer frame does have one drawback. My hand really hurts after repeated range firings. My brother-in-law has a Beretta 92F (former US Marine) and though it was noticeably heavier, it was more comfortable over lengthy shoots. Of course, if I use gloves when firing this problem goes away, its just I don't normally walk around with my shooting gloves on. I like to practice real-life. Also, I carry a 115 CorBon load. Seems the best, from what I have researched. Very nasty damage.

There isnt any "standard" sidearm carried by American police officers. Most departments use their own standards and perceptions based upon thier own needs to choose what will be carried. Others leave it up to the individual officers to carry what they wish. With all that said, I think that if you were to pick the most popular sidearm in use by American police officers it would be the Glock 22. The Berretta is pretty popular. But I'd guess it ranks 2nd in a three way race with other runner ups (Sig/S&Ws).

For us old guys, I'll stick to the 1911a1 in .45 caliber. The losers in WWII, Korea , and the Cold War for that matter all used 9mm.

This is a very subjective question and there isn't any real answer to as you well know. Unless its a real lemon they are all the best. When a country's military decides to aquire a new pistol they carry out extensive testing before picking out what they believe to be the best pistol for them, but you'd be hard pressed to find any agreement between various countrys picks. Just as when you buy a car everyone picks different models, colors and makes so too with pistols. If you put 20 pistol experts in a room with 20 different pistols they would all pick their favorites which would be 4 or 5 of the 20 provided. It would be impossible to get them to agree because each would like certain qualities in the weapon they picked over others. The real question,is what qualities are you want in a 9mm pistol not which is the best. Stoney
