According to a senior W5 flying these birds, the "brown out" simulator was not an effective tool in overcoming this frightfull situation. The "brown out" simulation did not portray what is really happening. It did provide a morale boost for young pilots. The leason learned at Karbala's "Charge of the Flight Sqd" was not to land in a hovering circle with the wind behind you. "The approach to landing a chopper in sand/dust is to come in delibrately and land abruptly before the dust column catches up with you".
