a review of some of our ww 2 equipment would suprise people how much of our heavy equipment was tank frame based. incredible devices, additions and adaptations were made to our tanks, just so they could keep up with the troops. why must the military, every generation or so, seem to pose a problem that has already been resolved? if you fail to remember history you will be forced to relive it.

Does too much money and gadgetitis sound right? I know "too much money" sounds silly, but when the money goes for gimmicks instead of basic common sense, the troops pay. It seems as if the Israelis have inherited our "Yankee in- genuity". Observe how they have updated some old tanks, and convert others into APCs. Maybe not gimmicky, but effective. Not the Israelis only; many smaller countries are showing the same adaptability. Top speeds is overblown. Combat formations do not advance at top speed, unless the troops have a death wish. Even in the open terrain of Iraq, the mech units normally advanced at 15-20 mph. While this was partly to avoid outrunning the log trains, it was also to conserve fuel, and to allow adequate scouting. The high speeds are reserved for actual maneuvering while in contact. Mobility (the ability to cross difficult terrain) is a more valid reason for use of tank chassis.
