According to SP the UK outsources the SAR helicopters.
That is a surprising move, as the Danish Forces are going in the other direction.

For us the Merlin is not considered to big, maybe a bit shortlegged ; but...
The trick is:

To maintain 24/7 availability of 3 SAR-helicopters you need 17 crews.
These 17 crews have to train to keep their flying status.
That means that every marina-party in Denmark can get a demonstration of SAR, they have to fly anyhow and train, so why not do a bit of PR at the same time?
Conversely it means that in an emergency you have - say 8 crews trained and available; why not use these crews for airlifting troops with the very same Merlin they use for SAR?

In fact the 8 SeaKings will be replaced with 14 Merlins in Denmark AND at a very low cost: The added ability of the army to deploy a infantry company by helicopter. That may come in handy.
