I do not seem to be able to find the reference right now but this subject was the source of some debate during the Democrat primary election. One of the news organizations actually did some research (heaven forfend) and came up with the following data:
 
Adjusted for age and sex, there is no statistically significant difference between the military and the general population in terms of suicide. There is a higher suicide rate among military personnel, overall, versus the general population, overall but this is attributed to the fact that young males (in particular) have a higher suicide rate generally. And, of course, any sample from the military community will be biased toward young males.
 
Thus ended yet another ill thought out, poorly researched accusation of the moonbeam left.
