Subject: north Korea what can its army and airforce do?
verong    3/11/2009 11:37:36 PM
Hey Folks, can the North Korean army survive a battle with South Korea and the USAF? I feel that this would be a holding action, since North Korea simply would not be powerful enough to defeat the South Korean forces, and I would suggest the USA keep its involvement at a minimum, so as to not see the war expand. How many of you agree with me that the US Army is stretched to thin to fight North Korea to a fullscale occupation Sincerely, Keith

Short answer -- No, they will not survive.

They will however do a lot of damage to Seoul (as in probably flatten it), first.

The tricky part is the end game.  China does not want an ally of the US on their border, but South Korea might not be willing to allow China to take over all or part of North Korea.  However, it is unlikely that China would take any steps to protect the Kim regime itself if they have an alternative.

Hey WARNERD,

I was thinking along the same lines. I would hope that North Korea would leave South Korea alone, but with their economy as it is I do not know as to where they may head. Especially if South Korea and USA economies continues to going south.

Sincerely,

Keith

Yuo mena that Afghanistan and Iraq are victories?

That after Seoul goes up in a mushroom cloud, soon thereafter the PRC will have a large radioactive parking lot to its South?

Is that what we were supposed to learn?

A lot of countries have nuclear technology. Not many have actual weapons. Thus far, N Korea hasn't demonstrated a weapons capability.

Occupy N Korea? Probably not. The DoD would need a massive expansion to sustain something like that with todays commitments. The S Koreans would have to help with that.

i was wondering, Darth, if we could compare this situation to the situation in Europe during the Cold War. It was only after the end of the cold war that many analysts realized the full extent of the economic breakdown in the USSR. While many postulated Soviet GDP as being as much as 50% of US GDP, later the figure that was floated was more in the league of US$1 trillion (a mere fraction).

Given that fact, given that basic necessities such as flour, meat, cooking oil, gasoline, etc were all being rationed at the time, could the USSR really have launched an attack into Western Europe logistically? How long could they supply armies on the move into western europe when they could not have fed their own populaces?

I wonder then how North Korea could supply an invading army when foodstuffs were at a minimum and given that the USAF would be bombing every bridge, supply dump, warehouse, dam, etc.

Any NK victory would be a Pyrrhic one, since every day the war went on, no matter what their fortunes, more and more would starve to death behind NK lines.

I wonder how this would play out.... would the army forge on regardless and would the people simply accept to die without a whimper of protest?

In Eastern Europe, the restive populations of Eastern Europe would SURELY NOT accept this. But i wonder about the NKans....

Hey DA,
then I take it that you believe it possible for North Korea to launch a armored invasion, and if unsuccessfull get a quick peace treaty???

Sincerely,

Keith
