Whether it is a glorious victory against the odds, a heroic defeat in the face of great adversity, or a legendary last stand type situation demonstrating bravery that will resonate throughout time. which do you fell on a personal level to you is the most moving piece of military action in history, for me on a personal level i am very moved by the heroic efforts of the 24th regiment at Isandlwana and their great last stand in the face of certain death and overwhelming odds, their courage and determination is truly awe inspiring to me, words cannot really serve to describe it, i certainly cannot do it enough justice.

The Charge of the 1st Minnesota at the Peach orchard on the 2nd day of the Battle of Gettyburg. I daresay that if they hadn't plugged the line the Union would have probably lost that battle. If that were the case we would have seen a far different American History.

smitty237    The Doolittle Raid   1/27/2011 10:29:54 PM
The American bombing raid on Tokyo early in WWII had little strategic military value, but it was a huge morale booster for the United States, and a big poke in the eye to the Japanese.  In many ways the risks outweighed the benefits on nearly every level, but the propaganda value of the raid mitigated those risks.  The raid demostrated to the American public, as well as the rest of the world, that we were not going to take the attacks on Pearl Harbor lying down, and showed the Japanese that we were more than willing to travel all the way across the ocean to attack the Japanese capitol.  As a result the Japanese beefed up their home defenses and showed the Japanese public that they were not safe from attack in their homeland.  The fact that most of the raiders survived the raid was certainly an added bonus.

Courage and professionalism in the face of overwhelming odds.  One company vs a regiment in the pouring rain in a rubber plantation.  Lest we forget

The Battle of Long Tan (18 August 1966) was fought between the Australian Army and Viet Cong forces in a rubber plantation near the village of Long Tan, The action occurred when D Company of the 6th Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment (6RAR),  encountered the Viet Cong (VC) 275 Regiment and elements of the D445 Local Forces Battalion. D Company was supported by other Australian units, as well as New Zealand and United States artillery.

During the battle the company from 6RAR, despite being heavily outnumbered, fought off a large enemy assault of regimental strength. 18 Australians were killed and 24 wounded, while at least 245 Viet Cong were killed. It was a decisive Australian victory and is often cited as an example of the importance of combining and coordinating infantry, artillery, armour and military aviation. The battle had considerable tactical implications as well, being significant in allowing the Australians to gain dominance over Ph&*32;&s899;c Tuy province, and although there were a number of other large-scale encounters in later years, 1ATF was not fundamentally challenged again.

The battle has since achieved similar symbolic significance for the Australian military in the Vietnam War as battles such as the Gallipoli Campaign have for the First World War, the Kokoda Track for the Second World War and the Battle of Kapyong for the Korean War

It is hard to choose just one, for me the list would include: Thermopolae, Agincourt, Roark's Drift, the Battle of San Bernandino Straight and the Alamo.

The defiant fight of Taffy Three to save Sixth Army makes Thermopylae  look like a joke
