I think the Corps would win, but both sides are tough as nails.

What a silly argument. The USMC, although at its heart a seaborne light infantry force, has evolved since WW2 as basically a self-contained mini-army complete with armor, artillery, and air assets, while the LE (Legion Entrangere) is, I believe, still a highly-trained light-infantry force, with minimal, if any organic heavy assets like artillery and armor and air. As far as whether the LE rank and file soldier is superior to the rank and file Marine - I'd say that based on the training regimens for both, that the Legionnaires undergo more stringent training than the average USMC infantryman. The LE rank and file might be more comparable to Force Recon. However, in any fight, the USMC's heavy assets would make short work of the LE. It's kind of like the US Army in 1945 against the German SS divisions. The SS infantry soldier might have been, man for man, more fit, better led, more experienced and all-around tougher than his American counterpart, but none of this mattered against countless numbers of Shermans, heavy artillery, and P-51s and P-47s strafing everything wearing the Iron Cross.

I'm pretty sure the modern Legion does not take criminals into its ranks. Much of its reputation has been built up by Hollywood, and of course is exaggerated. The Legion was never a haven for criminals or those fleeing the law. I suspect that, as the US Army once did, the Legion did have some recruits which were given the choice of service in the military or prison, and they chose the Legion, but not anyone on the lam from the law.

I watched a couple of TV programmes about some British Legionnaire recruits and their training regime. It included the Guyanan course. It was unbelievably dangerous and unpredictable. In places it would be easier for the unwary to break legs than not. It doesn't surprise me that the marines took so long. The first time the legionare recruits did it it took them almost that long, and that was with brutal instructors chivvying them.
