Subject: What is a Klick?
Schindlersmissed@aol.com    2/10/2001 12:34:40 AM
Granted Im not in the military and I watch too many movies But I always hear that, " we are a half Klick(or click, I dont know) from base". I gather that it is a measure of distance but what is it equal to? thanks

A Klick short for Kilometer. To be standard with the rest of the world the military refers to things in kilometers.

In the definition of "klick" (or klik), the spelling is derived from kilometer. "Click" is a term used when sighting-in weapons. It refers to one second of arc, or in American terms, one inch of distance at one hundred yards, two inches at two hundred yards, etc; so one click will move the point of impact 1 inch @ 100 yd and so on. The term comes from the clicking sound the sight adjustment knobs make as they are turned.

A click is a click; it is the full movement of an L1A1 gas regulator. Inf navigate by bearing (compass) and distance (pacing)(pre GPS that is). The pacing was kept by one or two nominated soldiers (normal one of the rifles). They would count in lots of 100 metres (about 110 paces on the flat, 100 down hill and 120 uphill). The soldier would keep track of the '100 metres' by moving the gas regulator one mark. After a 100 x 10 the counter would get the attention of the sect comd by hand signals and signal the a 1000 metres had been travelled by lifting the rifle and obviously rewinding the gas reg with a movement of the thumb. The gas reg would come to a stop with an audible 'click'. Hence 1 click = 10 x 100 metre = 1000 metre = 1 kilometre = 1 click. (aka 1 kay) I think you'll find that the 'click' colloquial moved into American mil language from the Australians during Viet Nam. Cheers, LXI.

a click in refference to sighting in a weapon would be dependant on the weapon of course. Some are 1/4 some or 1/2. But it is measured in minutes of angle. Seconds of angle would amount to a much smaller deviation at 100 meters.

One click of the elbow is a torque setting as well. A 'click' on gun/rifle sights normally marks a 100m increment so I can't see how this would have transfered in to mil language. I was there at the time and I saw 'click' evolve. No gaurantees in life but I'm pretty sure my explanation is right. Cheers, LXI.
