origin is british. literally the trap/snare put out for the booby. a south seas island bird foraged for food by sailors on islands.the birds
were easily caught and the word booby became the equal of a dope, jerk, or someone dumb enough to reach for a trinket, souvenoir, etc. which was or is wired to go redmist.
