Subject: Official Definitions for Terms Used in CW OR
Nactorman    8/7/2003 12:10:08 PM
I am seeking "official" definitions of terms used in the Official Records outlining military operations during the Civil War. Given in the records are lists of places and dates with a description. I wish to know the official definitions of the descriptions below:

1. Battle
2. Action
3. Engagement
4. Attack
5. Skirmish

While the differences between Battle and Skirmish seem obvious, the differences between an Action and an Engagement seem less so. Any information would be helpful. I may be e-mailed at: Nactorman@yahoo.com

Thanks
Charles
