The first part of the article hints that Saudi Arabia is preventing OPEC from cutting down the oil production in order to rise the price. Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and others have large cash reserves and can deal with it, Iran can't, that is true.

 

However, I don't think it is the main reason. If oil prices goes high, it will only make alternative sources more viable and profitable. It does permanent and irreparable damage, too, because high oil price justifies R&D costs of alternative sources. One of the reasons why the alternative sources are underdeveloped is availability of drilled oil at affordable prices.

 

 I would point out the other half of the double whammy OPEC attempts.

 

 Never forget who OPEC IS. They are an enemy, too, but for now just a co-belligerent of mere convenience.
