Subject: Strike

Hey pretty quiet around here. I wanted to ask what the issue was with the general strike in Israel currently underway. In my ignorance, I can't understand how the government refuses to pay salaries. How do the poor young couples manage their mortgage payments if they haven't been paid for months. I realise there are pieces of the story I'm missing but the regular press doesn't complete the puzzle.

The issue was with the local councils not paying their employees salaries, not balancing their budgets, and then having the trade union force the government to pay the salaries from the ministry of interior budget instead of their own budget. Local council members don't get fired or tried for criminal incompetence because they are party members.
The solution is to have salaries paid from the bottom up, so that the mayor and councillers are the last in line to get paid. That would make them stop and think.

Thanks for the respónse Battar..  in fact I was beginning to think that the SP contributors to the Israel board were on strike..  ; )

Either way I think it's a shame.  Surely the federal government can enact legislation enforcing the obligation of local councils to pay salaries for work done.  If the local councils don't pay salaries then their ability to collect taxes could be restricted.

Of course I am speaking on the basis of the limited knowledge I have of the situation and don't pretend to know the deeper implícations.

I just wonder how regular council workers pay their mortgages after so many months of going unpaid.  Seems very unfortunate.
