Jerry W. Loper    Israel would still have same foes   6/5/2007 1:37:22 PM
If Israel discovered huge reserves of oil, it would still be surrounded by the same hostile
neighbors that have been trying to destroy it since 1948.  I suppose Israel could sell most
of its oil to the USA, the one country that has pretty much stood by it for the last 60 years.
Then Israel and the USA could invite the Arab countries and Europe for that matter  to go
suck sand.  :)

Shirrush    But we have oil!   6/5/2007 3:28:52 PM
If I'm not mistaken, Israel has the third largest oil shales deposits on the effing planet.
It is not yet economically exploitable, but rest assured that I'll be among those resisting, violently if necessary, any attempt to strip-mine MY desert!
The black goo has been oozing from the rocks around the Dead Sea for as long as our Yiddishe pharmaceutical industry's motto has been "Poisoning the Chosen People for a Profit Since (at least) 2000 BC". Petroleum and its weathering product, bitumen, were used for medicinal and embalming purposes in Antiquity, and most of the stuff on the market at the time was indeed collected around the lowest spot of Eretz Israel. It was too precious to burn then. Large oilfields cannot exist in the area, since it features a major faultline and most of the jit flowed down the cracks a geologically long time ago.

Instead of finding the oil there isn't, we will find an alternative to burning reduced-carbon stuff for power, because we simply must.
In the meantime, disclosure: Merkava tanks, Egged buses, Ramat Aviv bourgeois SUVs and whatnots of the next decade will run on biodiesel made from Castor Oil. This common wayside weed can yield impressive quantities of non-edible oil, and only a little genetics are needed to make Ricinus communis a solar power atmospheric carbon soaker with a very modest thirst for, say, brackish and recycled water. We already have combine-harvestable varieties. Hi-ho.

If Israel had oil it would be invaded by several countries and factions by now. Settle for water, its relatively trouble free and 0 calories for health and headache.

But since you're not a fanatic, you only kinda-sorta suppose that might be true.  You don't really REALLY believe that stuff, because then you'd clearly be a fanatic.

Am I on track here?

According to the Arab fundamentalists the mere existence of Israel is upsetting the political and strategic balance in the region. I don't see how finding oil is going to change this.

Also finding oil could very well destroy Israel's economy, because you get something termed "Dutch disease". Source: "http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dutch_disease"

"
Dutch disease is an economic concept that tries to explain the seeming relationship between the exploitation of natural resources and a decline in the manufacturing sector. The theory is that an increase in revenues from natural resources will deindustrialise a nation's economy by raising the exchange rate, which makes the manufacturing sector less competitive. However, it is extremely difficult to definitively say that Dutch disease is the cause of the decreasing manufacturing sector, since there are many other factors at play in the economy. While it most often refers to natural resource discovery, it can also refer to "any development that results in a large inflow of foreign currency, including a sharp surge in natural resource prices, foreign assistance, and foreign direct investment."

As for being "Gods chosen people", you can talk about that all day and I still will not care about it.

Correcting a couple of ideas here...
First of all, biodiesel isn't as economical as it looks at first sight because the net energy content is the total calorific content minus the energy you have to expend to plan, cultivate, harvest, and extract the stuff from plants. The figuers don't look good. Also, if it becomes a lucrative business, biomass for fueld will be harvested instead of food crop on the same land - all for profit of course - which will drive up the cost of foodstuff.

Before oil shale and biodiesel become viable competitors to fossil oil, the valuse of the fossil oil will go up so that the oil producing nations will become a major world force. Since some of these nations are also Islamic fanatic style, the headlines in the future could get interesting.

As for the chap who claimed unconvincingly not to be a religious fanatic, has he stopped to consider how much terrorism and warfare and expended ammunition god has bestowed on his chosen people and country?

I agree with you 100%
God will bless them and if any Islamic countries get angry because western countries found
a new oil supply, too bad.

By the way, I was commenting on what rwporter said. I don't care if you call me a "fanatic". I'd like to see you explain
all the miracles that have happened to Israel. Against overwhelming odds the have succeeded. If you have a problem with what I'm saying, too bad!
