Subject: A2A vs SAMs
EW3    2/6/2006 12:57:16 AM
Is it possible for a hi-tech A2A missile (like the AMRAAM-C7/D) to take out a SAM that is fired at the same aircraft?

Theoretically, sure. A SAM is just a missile, often a fairly large one that shows up perfectly well on radar. Missiles like the AMRAAM are certainly capable of targeting and killing fast moving targets like that. The Russians like to advertise that the AA-12 is capable of shooting down incoming SAMs and even AAMs, but then the Russians advertise a lot of things. The problem is that SAMs are not usually fired at angles where the target could easily get a firing solution on the missile in time to fire an AAM at the incoming SAM. Typically, SAMs are fired from below and outside the target's radar field of view, so by the time the target's RWR indicates that a SAM is incoming, the target aircraft doesn't have a lot of time to maneuver his aircraft toward the SAM, get a radar lock on it, and fire his AAM. I suppose the "ideal" scenario for something like this would be a large S-300 or Patriot type missile fired from a long range, but that isn't often the case.
