Subject: Guaranteed To Hit & Destroy
Roman    7/19/2006 3:47:34 PM
Some of the current precision munitions have 90% probabilities of hitting and destroying thier intended targets. This is, of course, an enormous improvement over non-guided bombs and rockets/missiles, but it does not guarantee one bomb one target/aimpoint kill capability. There is still a 10% (or whatever) chance that the bomb or missile will not hit and destroy the target.

I know that technically speaking you can never have an absolute certainty that the target will be destroyed. Nevertheless, I would be interested in knowing how many extra bombs would a strike package carry 'just in case' if it wants to be certain that the target(s) it is going to strike will actually be destroyed. Essentially, what probability (how many bombs) is considered by the military to effectively amount to assured kill capability?
