Subject: AC-130: 120mm mortar to perhaps replace 105mm
reefdiver    7/19/2006 9:45:10 PM
Apparently the USAF is discussing replacing (or reboring) the 105 howitzer with a 1120mm mortar. Lower muzzle pressures, 1/2 the weight etc. Thoughts on this?

Over on Military.com a while ago, and in a Jane's Defence Weekly several months back, there was the talk that a 120mm mortar gives the option of PGM delivery, something the 105mm howitzer lacks (also thoughts of hanging Viper Strikes- laser guided variants of BAT submunitions- underwing). A PGM would actually allow the aircraft to fire outside of the standard "orbit of death", even to the point it could be flying in a given vector adjacent to the target area (so as not to raise suspicion), fire laterally, and steer the shell to a given impact. Also under discussion was replacing both the 25mm GAU-12 and 40mm Bofors guns with 30mm Mk 44 chain guns (Bushmaster IIIs, with a ROF possibly to around 400 spm), with the option under consideration to make all three weapons (mortar, 2 chain guns) being independently targettable.
