Meteor BVRAAM will be by far the most capable AAM when it comes into service. This asks the question what is the best fighter/missile combo, F-22 with AMRAAM or Typhoon with BVRAAM? I think you can answer this by looking at the idea for the US Navy to fit it's F-35B with BVRAAM

No, the AIM-120D will outclass the Meteor.

Prove it. Supply some links to validate your juvenile assertions please.

"Isnt the Meteor gonna be the best missile ever? i strongly believe so.." Well, there's the matter of the R-77M and the R-77PD, which will be available for production a good deal sooner than the Meteor....(actually, the R-77M is available NOW)..

AMRAAM-D's best feature is probably, in addition to the extended range, the ability to shoot using a "GPS mode" that allows the radar to switch on MUCH later. Also, it has a two way datalink with the controlling fighter jet which means it's more flexible AND provides the shooter with updates on the enemy's maneuvers and status. OTOH, I think Meteor has a longer range. I guess that kinda depends on who's using what. Personally, I think a "stealth" suprise attack of an AMRAAM-D salvo will be much more effective at killing fighters than Meteors which advertise early on. The key though, is that the stealth features of the F-22 and F-35 let them use the AMRAAM in that fashion, while the much less stealthy Typhoons are better off taking safe shots with their Meteors at long range. B/c the fact is, the real point of competition is which is better at knocking Russian and French exports out of the sky.

Meteor: 100km at Mach 4 AIM-120D: 140km at Mach 4 We know AIM-120D has the two-way data link, which Meteor does not have. We know AIM-120D will be more manueverable than Meteor. And we know AIM is a proven missile base, which Meteor is not (1st generation technology). Heorot, the only juvenile im seeing is you..

Meteor only has a range of 100km?! I always thought it was about a 100mi! GODDAMN conversion factors.

Whether it's 100kms (61.5mi) or 140km (85.8mi), either way it's rather academic. In the present global social environment, opening fire BVR is a great way to invite a huge conniption fit on the part of the kinder, gentler CLAM (Congressional Left/Academia/Media, as per Col. Jeff Cooper). The results would probably not be career-enhancing for whoever gave the order to shoot..

Hello everybody (especially the Romanian !), Even if range/range_max is not a important factor to judge the efficiency of a air-air missile, I would lke to fix some mistakes you've made: http://www.eads.net/frame/lang/en/1024/content/OF00000000400004/1/06/560061.html "Meteor’s throttleable airbreathing solid-propellant ramjet system ensures a range of more than 100 km at speeds of up to Mach 4" Transcription of "more than" to "equal" is the mistake I pointed out. Max_Range at mach 4 of meteor is suposed to be unknown for the moment. (I hope it is !) Nowdays the most important spec for air equipments is price. Eurofighter/Typhoon, Rafale and Gripen with meteor will correspond to future needs. Even if future AIM is more efficient than Meteor, buying a F-24 with AIM-120 D will cost to much compared to it's capabilities. Conclusion is that AIM will be out of competition in 6 years.

Oup's I made a big mistake: "Even if future AIM is more efficient than Meteor, buying a F-22 with AIM-120 D will cost to much compared to it's capabilities.
