The first entry of this comment was truncated. "Iranian Speedboats Blasted By Brimstone"   This title is grossly misleading. " On June 25th a British Tornado jet fighter fired a Brimstone missile at a fast moving small armed boat (of the type Iran favors) and hit the target."   The title says that an Iranian vessel was struck.   The opening sentence says that the vessel was of the type used by Iran but did not state that the vessel was an Iranian armed boat.   Was the boat manned at the time of the strike or was the boat a remotely controlled test boat?    Where did the incident occur?   What identifying markings did the boat have?     Time for a rewrite.

Heorot    It was a test   7/16/2012 2:09:10 PM
   Here's the text from Defenceworldnet:

MBDA has announced today that it has test fired the operational Dual Mode Brimstone missile.

During the trial in Wales, a RAF Tornado GR4 targeted a fast moving FIAC RT (Fast In-Shore Attack Craft realistic target), successfully engaging and sinking it.

“This latest firing was a great success for the team” said Paul Stanley, MBDA International Market Development Director. “This additional Capability builds upon the data gathered in March and demonstrates Brimstone’s low collateral yet lethal effects against moving and maneuvering FIACs. It also significantly advances and confirms MBDA’s ability to offer customers as of now an extremely effective, anti swarming FIAC capability using our world leading, combat proven Brimstone missile in its mmW version”.

With many variables, the FIACs are small, fast and agile making them difficult to track and engage. The difference with Brimstone is that the mmW radar actually tracks the target rather than a wandering laser beam or laser return.

“This makes Brimstone the only currently available weapon capable of providing a fully effective solution against small, fast moving and maneuvering maritime targets” added Paul Stanley.

The Brimstone has already demonstrated its capabilities as the weapon of choice against a range of fixed and moving ground targets during operations in Afghanistan and Libya.

Tucci78    How d'you know it was a test?   7/16/2012 8:17:53 PM
The Mad Mullahs of Qom have been making all kinds of noise about the Islamic Republic gaining a blue-water naval capability.

Might could be that the boat in question was a Quds Force attack element inbound with malign intent upon a target in Wales.

Don't want to get the Taffies all in a pull, right?

"fire and forget"

That phrase always makes me laugh.  Is there anyone in the world who flies a plane, shoots a missile, and then forgets that he shot a missile?  "Holy crap, that ship just blew up!  Oh yeah, I remember now.  I shot it with a missile, but forgot about it."
