And a second question, how does the Israeli Python 5 compare to these two?

I'd give the AIM-9X some credit and rate it as equal to the R-73A/E. It has a better seeker and better off-boresight capability but inferior rocketry and control surfaces with which to take advantage of this ( the missile is too small, it is at the end of its development life). The AIM-9X is NOT the equal of the R-73M (M2 especially), however. This refined model has a significantly improved seeker and improved motor/fuel, increasing its range and off-boresight capability.

While the rocketry comparison is debatable-as Russian rocketry is excellent overall, the control surface issue isn't. For one, the proof is in the performance...the AIM-9X can hit a target flying BEHIND it, and pulls 60Gs in turns using its new control surfaces. As a dogfight missile, I believe that makes it superior.

"For one, the proof is in the performance...the AIM-9X can hit a target flying BEHIND it, and pulls 60Gs in turns using its new control surfaces." I do believe that the R-73M2 has a capability at least equal to this (a spin-off of the R-73M2 is optimised for "over the shoulder" launch for the Su-32/34 and Su-35/37) while retaining its rocketry/ range advantages. To answer your question, Gods-army, I'd go the R-73 (any version) but some may dispute this.

Actually, I also just remembered, the X variant has enough propulsion to give it a BVR range...it just doesn't have the long range seeker to take advantage of it...another point where the advantage blurs. Personally, I'd put my money on the AIM-9X. There's also too many R-73 variants in my opinion. The AIM-9X consolidates a lot of abilities into one neat little package. It's also probably got better signal processing and software which probably gives it a more efficient endgame sequence.

LOL, really? How many variants are there of the AIM-9.....? Well the X in title is because aim series has worked it way through the alphabet to X not because it a cool letter are a exepermental missile. Sidewinders were takeing out Mig 15s in korean war I think it just hit 50 years old are is about to.

I know, that was supposed to be a joke...... My point was that the Sidewinder has far more versions than does the R-73.

What I meant was there are too many at once...the Sidewinder is pretty much standardized into 1/2 versions while in operation. Recent Russian AAMs have been constantly modified. Probably b/c they don't make enough of them.
