Subject: Danish Air Force launch GPS guided bomb from F-16A
Thomas    4/14/2004 9:20:58 AM
The Danish Air Force has officially announced the launch of a local variant of GPS guided bombs for their F-16A update something. The main problem was that the codes for transmission from plane to bomb weren't available, so they had to work around that. The bombs were tested on a range in Norway (inert, as we don't want damage to norwegeans). They hit "within yards" of the target. The 2 bombs released actually touched each other on the target.

I think will see allot more of this type of upgrade in future. Take the f22 there talking about spending 11 billion$ on giving it ground attack ability. When all it really needs is ability to drop JDAMs to suplement its air to air role.

What I find particularly interesting is, that a small country is quite capable of developing/adapting these weapons. PGM will not be the prerogative of large nations.

Ive heard/read that the French ?!? have used/are using palmtop tagged onto the upper leg and a custom/stock GPS receiver. A little transmitter sends the data to the GPS Guided bombs and....bingo a very cheap PGM

As far as I know, it's the same principle the danes use, as it was impossible to get the manufacturer to deliver the codes for transmission Air-craft launcher

Nah, just centuries cheating the tax-man. The interesting proposition is that the technology is available to more or less everybody.

PGM are not that hard to make for any industial country. The thing holding many back is cost when compared buying american existing versions. US produces PGM in suck large numbers that the cost per unit are so low that most just buy american instead of spending 10 to 50 times more to produce there own.
