Subject: The RAF AMRAAM Goes Wild
giblets    9/23/2004 8:30:04 AM
With regards to this story, utter tosh apparently, other than this story was reported in the Daily Telegraph back in june 2002, Apart fromthe fact that the test firing Tornado was not an RAF aircraft (Bae systems) and had NO wingman, so the whole firing on wingman scenario would be useless. Further to this, the AMRAAM is designed witha datalink in mind, so that once fired, the aircraft in question can send two further mid course updates to the missile before the misiles own seeker kicks in, which of course requires the aircraft to activate its radar and as stated, would give the aircrafts position. However, unlike the USAF, the RAF originally decided not to use this, however, this was then re-instated in 2001 (BAE SYSTEMS Investment Brief - July 2001).
