Subject: IRST VS targeting pods
ej    10/25/2004 2:58:30 PM
I know that western fighters usually dont have an integrated IRST system for air to air combat (does the typhoon and rafael have one?), but most of the new external targeting pods have an air to air mode .How does those systems fare against eastern IRST systems? Is the only difference is that a targeting pod is not a part of the plane and is installed under the wing,or do dedicated IRST AtoA systems have other features, which make better for air combat engagements ?

Targeting pods have yet to be used as "air" targeting pods...at most they provide a search service useful in low light conditions for aircraft without NVGs.

What about the new "sniper XR" targeting pod: its supposed to have an air to air mode which can search and track aircraft with its FLIR sensor

Actually, USAF F-15Es have claimed to be able to use their LANTIRN pods in air-to-air role. Early US fighters like F-102/106 had IR tracking capability, but it fell from favor until F-14D incorporated IRSTS. Pods can indeed act as sensor as long as aircraft software "integrates" the information properly.
