Anyone able to confirm whether an R-77 has been monitored during a test fire, or evaluated in a shoot? I was under the impression that some had been acquired and tested some time ago. if it's an "urban" then just smack me down. ;)

C'mon, I know you know that FMA/FME (Foreign MAteriel Acquisition/Foreign Materiel Exploitation) programs are basically always classified. That said, you probably wouldn't even need to take off your shoes to count up the number of operational weapon systems we HAVEN'T exploited! ;-) Displacedjim

"Ooohhh, bad Aussie, BAD! Don't tease the nice American. Just throw the peanut, and see if he goes for it. Awww, isn't he CUTE?" Didn't your mother teach you to be kind to animals and other lesser creatures? :-) Displacedjim

"Anyone able to confirm whether an R-77 has been monitored during a test fire, or evaluated in a shoot?" It performed quite well in Malaysian AF excercises (from MiG-29Ns) against F/A-18Ds, with the MiGs getting a firing solution at ~45-60km. Obviously, they did not subsequently fire the missiles (well, I'm not sure, but it seems a logical assumption :-), so I don't think this would qualify as a good answer to your original question.

I read the following on another forum a while ago... "The only suspected kill by the R-77 was a test firing in 1986 that went bad, where a R-77 fired from a MiG-23 downed an Aeroflot AN-26 killing 26 passangers while attempting a radar intercept on a Mi-6 Hook helicopter drone. The AN-26 had a larger radar cross section and no ground clutter." Can anyone confirm this???

I don't know. Offhand I've got some doubts: 1) 1986? Seems eaarly. 2) MiG-23? Must've been a special test bird with something other than a HIGH LARK on board. 3) Aeroflot flying over weapons test ranges? Displacedjim

The test was successful. From what I've read, the MiG-29, MiG-31 and Su-27 were the only launch aircraft used in the R-77 development. The MiG-23's Sapfir is woefully inadequate when it comes to providing data and illumination for the R-77, and only recent MiG-23MLD upgrade packages fearuring the N-019E Topaz radar are capable of launching them.
