Subject: A real basic question
EW3    5/5/2005 7:37:14 AM
The F-15C is listed as having a 16,000 lb load with conformal tanks. Does anyone have a link that would help me understand what specific loads it can carry? I mean simple math says it can carry 40 AMRAAMs, but somehow I doubt it works that way.

That would depend on how many store pylons it has, how much weight each individual pylon could take, and what electronics each pylon is outfitted with. You may find a chart for the F15 on FAS.org.

Sometimes these numbers come about by adding up all the rated loads for all the stores stations. There may not be an effective qualified loadout that uses the maximum payload due to stores interferences, separation issues, etc. The first thing to look at on an airplane like the F-15 is how many external tanks can it carry? 3 600 gallon drop tanks will weigh in at almost 13-14,000 lbs. Add 4 AMRAAMs on the CFTs and 4 'winders on the wing pylons and you get [click, click, click...] about 15-16,000 lbs.

the 16,000 pound you mentioned is the sum of the maximum war load. and is found by adding the weights of all the ORDINANCE it can cary. NOT DROP TANKS! to do this requires that each pilon/hard point have the right bomb on, I belive that is a 3000 on the CL station, two six packs of Mk-82s on the wing stations and a bunch of Mk-83s on the CFTs, 900 rounds of 20MM and FOUR SPARROWS. =166,401 pounds IIRC.

166,401lbs is about 80tonnes!!! Somehow I think the maths is a tad off on this one. Back to basics...

No no Dropbear, we all know Shooter is the expert.

Yep, my basic maths skills are pretty good considering I come from one of those non-American countries where our efforts in avionics are in vain as they are at least 30 years behind that of the good ol US of A. ;)

160,000 pounds is twice the maximum takeoff weight, at a guess I'd reckon a decimal place is missing.

Perhaps it is a new regional bomber offering from the now defunct MacAir. T"he Super Beagle, coming to an airbase near you. Able to haul a larger payload than a Boeing B747..." Smirk. ;)

Be nice guys. Compared to my typos, Shooter is Gutenberg. Actually I'm interested by "two six packs of Mk-82s". Anyone know if that would include the JDAM version of the Mk-82. I would think the ability to take out 12 fixed point targets would make the F-15 very useful for quite a few more years.

F-15, poor mans F-111 ;) Not sure EW3, couldn't imagine they'd often be called upon to level 12 targets simultaneously from a single tacjet. Then again, we could consult Carlo Kopp on this interesting subject treatise... ;)

F-15, poor mans F-111 Well put. The better the accuracy the smaller the required bomb load for most targets. That is why UAVs will work out. Besides, if a tacjet could do it, why not. If only to take out fixed assets along the coast of a country, after stealth aircraft has taken out SEAD targets. Heck, we have 200+ F-15Es. Any 10 could give you the ability to kill say 100 targets. If they could carry SDBs (don't know about hardpoints) you could double the number. Not a bad mornings work for a few Eagle drivers. With midair refueling they could provide and a CL tank, they could probably get to most targets with 3 hours from Guam. USAF - "when it has to be absolutely destroyed over night".

"Besides, if a tacjet could do it, why not." Doctrine. I'm sure there are still a few old hands from the former SAC that would prefer a B-1b or its ilk go bomb lobbing for multiple targets. "USAF - "when it has to be absolutely destroyed over night". " I still prefer ours - Two cans per man per day, perhaps. ;)

FWIW - the B-1 is in the block. It's high maintenance and with PGMs there has been discussions about cutting back on them. But this might be the opening gambit by the USAF to build the FB-22. ;)

Gimme, gimme, gimme... B-1b would fill the roll of the Pig nicely. Can't say I've ever been a supporter of the LM F-35 JSF. Ahh, those arguments with Aussiegunner are bringing back memories...

My brother gets a real kick out of your view of the Pig. He was a radar guru after he got off the DEW line and helped design the terrain avoidance radar of the "Pig". It really will be hard to replace it. It is a very peculiar bird. A true fighter bomber like the B-25 of old. Perhaps you guys should invade or buy a small island north of you and use it as a stationary carrier. Sort of the way we use Guam and Okinawa.
