Brimstone is one of those 'brilliant' weapons that I predict will never be allowed to be used. A pilot is not allowed to just pick out targets and drop weapons willee-nillee. They have rules of engagements and approval procedures under any but the most extreme conditions. When you fire a Brimstone, you have no guarantee what it is going to hit. You can brag about automatic target recognistion algorithms until you're blue in the face. Murphy's Law absolutely guarantees that every school bus in the country will look like a T-72. The reality is that a weapon is not going to be given more liberal rules of engagement than manned aircraft.

I agree about all that you said about target recognistion but I think that this weapon is made for Offensive roles and not defensive roles. The weapon is useful for softening tha AO before the main attack on the ground starts.

In which war? WW II or Korea? The US was pretty offensive in Iraq a few years back and the Brimstone would not have been useable even if the US had them.

I was specifically refering to US usage. Other coutries can establish their own Rules of Engagement within the guidelines of whatever coalition they belong to. But the only country that has Brimstone is England, and I don't see them being any looser with regards to weapon employment than the US. Countries that hold themselves to high standards with regards to the rules of conflict will not allow weapons the autonomously pick and choose who will die. And the Brimstone does just that.

If you are talking about coalition and that they may have sepperate commands and that US pilot can "accidentaly" bomb an ally then I understand. But if you have an air suppremacy and want to kick a out of enemy Brimstone is quite good because TornadoGR1 can carry a load of 12 brimstones and can do hell on ground whitout realy getting in battle.Fire-forget rules.

I don't care how reliable the MMW seeker is supposed to be at automatic target recognition, Brimstone is guaranteed to find every schoolbus, ambulance and car carrying an expectant mother to the hospital in its field of regard. And that kind of collateral damage, today, is as unacceptable as fraticide.

And it eats sheet metal triangles well, too; standard issue Russian decoy radar reflector is just that.

It probably discriminates more than clusterbombs, which is what it is intended to create. Clusterbombs are evil, you see.

Look about that school bus: 1)It is a good weapon to fight with it outside any city. 2)You are right about that schoolbus crap. 3)And what the f... are school buses going to do on the middle of the battlefield. 4)GETTING THERE YET! 4)
