Subject: Poland - not enough credit given.
skrip00    3/15/2005 5:32:55 PM
I think poland is set to become a major power player in future europe. The nation is a close ally of the united states, and is willing to deal with threats present to their nation. Poland has good relations with its surrounding neighbors, but wont bow down to their opinions or actions. The polish people still have memories of what Germany and Russia did to them in WW2 and wont easily trust them. Their entrance into the EU and NATO was done for economic and military reasons in order to become like the rest of western europe. Also, because of their hatred of "left" wing governments, like communism, or socialism, theyre more akin to the US and are willing to use force when necessary. Like Iraq.

Poland has nuclear reactors, and the expertise to build nuclear weapons. Theyve made many improvements to Soviet tank designs with the PT-91 "Twardy" using improved FCS and armor. Their Air Force has a mix of Russian and US aircraft, but as time passes, it will probably rely more on US aircraft.

With Germany making noise about US bases there, it is in my opinion that the US moves to poland. The polish people are willing to foot the bill to have the most powerful nation in the world directly protecting them. The nation of poland has been a great ally of the United States since the days of the Revolutionary War when they sent their military officers to help train the Americans, like Pulaski. During World War 2, Polish cryptos helped break many German codes, and aided the British and US after the nation was invaded. The Polish Free Forces helped the Allies immensly, and always wanted to be a major part in the war to retake their homeland. Even now, Poland has a major contingent in Iraq... the 5th largest.

I think the US should do more to further improve relations with Poland, it has potential to become a greater ally than France, Germany, and Spain could have ever been. More weapons, tanks, and modern technology should be sent their way, expecially after they went into iraq in full support of the US. But lately, the US media, and many in the gov't keep their praises silent and continue to waste time on "old europe". I say ditch those losers... to them freedom is bland, but to many nations in eastern europe, like poland and others, they earned it from the wretched soviets and understand wat it takes to maintain their freedom.

Well Polands biggest advantage now compared to the past is the lack of a heavily armed and militant power that badly outnumbers them on each border. Not having to worry about Russo-German invasion means they can divert resources away from a 'home defence' type military toward an 'expeditionary' force, and also maintain a higher quality professional force instead of conscripts. It also enables them to concentrate more on economic development which will make them more powerful in the long run. The Poles have always been the outnumbered, outgunned but never outfought people of Europe, and us in Britain remember 303 (Koziusko)Sqdn. from the Battle of Britain and the Free Poles at Monte Cassino...

I think the mood in Poland wrt to military affairs with the US has turned somewhat more sceptical. This is due to the Iraqi war which has dented US leadership, not only in Poland, but in the rest of new Europe as well.

This has turned the Polish position on basing, eg the BMD shield, into a quid pro quo position. Don't expect the Poles to foot any bills.

Besides, as far as ground and air forces are concerned, US basing in Romania and Bulgaria looks far more politically, economically and geograpically attractive than basing in Poland.

While France attacked within europe and formed economic ties to the ottomans...

Louis ruthlessly used the occasion, before and after the battle of Vienna, to annex territories in western Europe, such as Luxembourg, Alsace with Strasbourg, etc. Due to the ongoing war against the Turks, Austria could not support the interest of German allies in the West. The biography of Ezechiel du Mas, Comte de Melac illustrates the devastastions of large parts of Southern Germany by France.

After the Muslim Armies were driven back from the Gates of Vienna in 1683, the Alliance which defeated them wanted to form a more complete European Alliance to drive them out of the conquered territories of Eastern Europe.

But France for one, which had extensive economic ties with the Ottoman Empire, was not interested.
History repeats itself.
