Subject: Submarine Anti Aircraft Capabilities
Iano    12/9/2004 7:46:58 AM
I know this sounds very odd, however it just occured to me that all other platforms have capability against all others as well as their opposite numbers, ie. ships can engage not only other ships but submarines and aircraft, and aircraft can engage not only other aircraft but ships and submarines. However submarines can only engage other submarines and ships, which gives them no capability against ASW helicopters or maritime patrol aircraft, except presumably to hide. Now as we have weapons systems capable of being launched from a submarine and breaking the surface - I am talking of Sub Harpoon, not just the expensive cases of Trident and Tomahawk, why not a submarine launched air defence missile, something along the lines of a Sub Seawolf, to give the boats something to counter air threats? I read an account by a USN exchange officer during a "Perisher" course, I think it is linked to from dutchsubmarines.com, of being searched for by a Sea King for hours, and seeing the Sea King through the periscope, and thought, how useful would an antiair missile be to them at that moment?

heres my idea: take a MK48 torp, remove the warhead and the active sonar, keep the passive. replace those with 2- 3 heat seeking midget missiles, approximately stinger size. fire the torp from deep and/or distant. Use wire guidance and the passive to get it fairly close toa helo then launch the missile on a proximity (found using sonar) or remote control (assuming a wire guided tether is in use) I would think it could work, but Im just a high school NJROTC about to enlist.

why in the world would you launch things aginst an aircraft from a sub. it just seems a fast way to kill yourself. so your lucky and you take out the helo looking for something well the fact it was looking means it didnt know if anything was there. so you might as well keep hiding. start launching stuff and your gonna get a torp up your butt. tell everyone your around and looking for a fight and before you know it your hunted down.

The biggest problem is aicraft detection at medium range to make a missile solution valuable.
Such a solution would be also a vaste of time and money if patrolling aircraft have only to fly higher to be immune from such systems.

hi well presence of a SUBSAM is surely threatening for a big dipper and also useful as it can atleast disturb de firecontrol solution of de same but its accuracy is doubted if its wire guided then it depends on operator to take it to target and if it is IR homing den how much is it going to be accurate . and at what depth the submarine should be and what abt after launching it , will it be able to evade and hide again , is it worth disclosing its position or its better to remain hidden to answer all of dese questions we need to examine the role of submarines , previously they were deployed to disturb the trade route and presently they are mostly deployed for laying of mines and channel blockad along wid that disturbing thing , so keeping in view its new role it would not be bad if submarine is able to launch a missile from a substantial depth
