Subject: Reactor scram!!!
capt soap    7/10/2005 7:37:19 PM
I spent 28 months aboard a usn ssn during the late 70's. One of the most scarcest time aboard the boat was reactor scram. At least once a week we would have a reactor scram, the boat would be sinking deeper and deeper while trying to get the reactor back on line.Just like the thrasher, but we did have a emergency blow system that would put us on the surface, but we didnt always want that, (easy target). It's a helpless feeling seeing the depth gauge read 900 ft, 1000ft, 1100 ft finally a reactor, and were on our way. Hope the newer clases are more relaible.

I was om the Glenard p Lipscomb SSN 685. It was a 1 class boat between the 637 and 688 class. The Lipscomb at the time 76-80 was the world's quetist sub according to my skipper. What was special was turbo electric drive> Large dc moter after the steam turbines, the dc moter was directly connected to the shaft the navy was disappaointed in speed (29) kts. But very stealthy. out speacialty was spec-ops.... following new russian boats, I fly for a living now, dont miss subs...Capt Soap

Another capricious toy of Rickover. I am not sure he did as much good to the Navy then bad... Let's see, we have had the best submarine fleet in the world since Adm. Rickover. Every USN sub is based on his original approach. So what is wrong with what he did?

I am presently reading Cold War Submarines, from Polmar, and the way Rickover discarded any idea that wasn't his, like CONFORM and other projects was not fair game. I know that US SSNs have no equal, but ppl tend to forget the problems in development of 688 and 726. Yes they became best in the world, buy it took time... and $$$!

"I am presently reading Cold War Submarines, from Polmar, and the way Rickover discarded any idea that wasn't his, like CONFORM and other projects was not fair game." I've read the same book. I'd argue that its Rickovers single mindedness that is more important in recognising the successes. People like Rickover, Sirmalis need far greater recognition for what they achieved. If it wasn't for Rickover the US would have not had a first strike advantage as early as it did. In the scheme of things, the single mindedness of the Rickovers and Le Mays is what saved the USA's arse. I do find Polmar a bit inconsistent, and I do realise he is almost one of the "untouchables" that people are sometimes uncomfortable criticising - but I don't think he gets things in a clear perspective. In Australian terms he's almost a parallel with CW Bean... good stories, but one to be wary of if using his material as a reference source of historical accuracy.
