Subject: How effective & reliable are sonar signatures
reefdiver    3/9/2007 2:24:11 PM
I know maintains a database of sonar signatures for subs for surface vessels and subs to use but I have a few questions:

1) Do they capture signatures from "hostiles"? If so, with SOSUS shut down, does any network exist to assist in such capture or does it rely "close encounters" with other vessels?

2) Do they capture signatures of surface ships?

3) How reliable are these signatures for determining friend or foe? (I assume there is software comparing these signatures)

4) Are there underwater mines that make use of these databases so that known friendlies can pass unharmed?

5) Are there any torpedos that can target vessels based on these signatures or at least not attack friendlies?

I am no expert....

But from what I understand. Signatures are captured, either by close encounters or underwater boyes, UUV etc. I belive CBASS / mod7 torpedoes use this accoustic technology. I belive they have fiber optic links so the may be able to update databases etc. This information is thin on the ground.

From what I hear it works very well.
