Does anyone know if NR-1 has a red sail/conn for rescure/identification purposes when in the polar regions - or is it just to ident it as a research asset?

No, Gulf of Mexico.  The Bahamas reference was a throw away comment about general visibility issues in clear waters.

Don't think you'll find the NR-1 hanging out in shallow water.
 
Gee, if they're in the Gulf of Mexico I wonder if they'd look for that Spanish treasure shipwreck I've always wanted to find...
