Subject: Why no turbines for SS?

turbine engines are good. Once they are turned on, they can drive dynamo at most efficient speed. Turbines operates at higher RPM, which means that the noise it generates are also at higher frequency band, which decays faster in water. It is uaually lighter and more compact than diesel engines that produces the same amount of hourse powewr. The only problem may be the reduction gears which are making the noise.

Turbine engines are good.  Diesels are better.  A diesel can breath through a snorkle.  A gas turbine has huge intakes and exhaust ports.  They could not be run through a snorkle.  Submarines run so low in the water, the uptakes would have to go through a much enlarged sail to keep water out.  The volume saved using a turbine is almost offset by the size of the uptakes.  Then think of trying to seal those huge holes.  And saving weight isn't a big deal.  After all, you don't really care if your sub sinks.

But the rest of us might like to surface after a dive.
