Subject: Japan Deploys AIP Oyashio - Soryu
Softwar    12/7/2007 11:41:49 AM
http://www.janes.com/news/defence/naval/jni/jni071206_1_n.shtml The first of three improved Oyashio-class attack submarines on order for the Japanese Maritime Self-Defence Force (JMSDF) was launched at Mitsubishi Heavy Industries' Kobe shipyard on 5 December. At 84 m long and 4,200-tons submerged, Soryu is significantly larger than the original 11 Oyashio-class boats (81 m and 3,500 tons) in order to incorporate a Kockums Stirling air independent propulsion (AIP) system. Components for the AIP, which will enhance the vessel's stealth and special operations capability, were supplied by the Swedish company for assembly in Japan.

Different subs, different design fundamentals.  RAN decided against AIP, Stirling module was bought for T&E and excluded. RAN/ASC view was that there was no demonstrable advantage for Collins due to existing efficiencies.  The Stirling AIP module is sitting on a pallet as an overgrown paperweight.

Re Oyashios, an extra 700 tonnes of difference means that they have changed more than inserting an AIP module.  They could have inserted Stirling into the existing hull if pushed.

There are certainly design elements and capabilities in the Oyashios that I'd like to see in Collins.

They still don't have the sig management advantages though......

Why not sell it to another navy?  Contract prohibits resale?  Just in case?  I should think the module has some value even if just parts.  Curious.

I suspect that a few things will happen:

- there will be some interaction with the japanese navy to gauge their opinion (there are closer relations between RAN and JMSDF now), comparisons will be made on their AIP Stirling assessment, and RANs
- the engine will be used in new tests for Collins 2.  Collins 2 will have AIP as there is a vision for it to have a different long range mission profile
