That  powerful democrats pretty much forced the Navy to name a Seawolf after a President that gutted the Navy makes me sick. Of course we now have the USS Gabby Giffords so the follies continue...

Jimmy Carter is the only former US President to have served on US Navy submarines.

Carter was on track to become one of the USN's pioneer batch of SSN commanders, but upon his father's death, he resigned his commission to take over his family's farming business in 1953. It's conceivable that if he did not resign at that time, he could have been the 'plank owner' commander of the USN's second SSN, the USS Seawolf (SSN-575) that was laid down that year.

Addendum: Carter was slated to be the Seawolf's first Engineering Officer.
