Iran does not have a "fleet" of 20 submarines.  They have 3 Kilo's and some mini subs.  It would be shocking if the USN doesn't know where the Kilo's are 24/7.  Iran's navy is far closer to a list of targets than a serious threat.  The major threat they present is laying naval mines.

Torpedo reload?  Maybe for practice, against the US or any other sophisticated navy  I'm not sure the third fish would be launched before there would be 1000 tons of scrap metal at the bottom of the sea.

Among Iran's exaggerations we may be wiser not to overlook perhaps their most ominous and realistic<A HREF="http://aquilinefocus.blogspot.com/2012/01/irans-submariners-volunteer-for-suicide.html"REL="nofollow">  submarian threat.</A>  - Just a submariner's thought.

Didn't we pull all of our S3 Viking anti-submarine aircraft off of our carriers and retire them?  Does anyone else think that, with the threat of mini-subs and quiet diesel subs lurking about by rogue nations with something to prove that maybe we should think about re-introducing them?  Just wondering.

I'm not sure there's any rogue nation with "quiet diesel subs".  Certainly Iran and their three boats are not a big concern.

ASW is a numbers game.  It's not one particular platform but rather large numbers of sensors carried and deployed by various ships, aircraft, etc.  Certainly losing the S-3 was a net loss in capability but has the battle group lost or gained total capability given the total number of systems used to support it?  If a battle group is assigned an extra SSN in support how many S-3's is that worth?  Frankly the S-3's were providing a lot more capability than ASW and some of that has been less easily replaced.

Quiet also commonly assumes nobody is going to use active sonar.  ASW isn't one dimensional.  Quiet is relative.  An SSN able to quickly change position can be more quiet relative to the hunters than a diesel.

Although the threat of some noisy old Kilo laying on the bottom waiting for the Vinson Battle Group to come thru seems preposterous, anyone who has seen ASW up close knows that is a tactic that CAN work. CAN, as in, “Train like you fight, fight like you train”.

If the Iranians have been practicing against large hulled surface ships, if they can blow & go at short notice AND if they can get a fish off in time before the bell sounds, they MIGHT be able to pull it off … but only ONCE.
After that, I’d have to agree w/ @HeavyD – there’ll be 100tons o’ scrap in the sand.
Y'know, I seem to recall Iranian Bubbleheads in school with my class (back when we were all friends)
Maybe they know more than we think...
