I might be wrong, but Russia might have geopolitical interests which might be in conflict with ones of the West. It has nothing to do with Cold War and past ideological deviations.

 

Before the period of Soviet Union Russia was involved in number of conflicts in Baltic, Eastern Europe, and Central Asia. Conflicts involved countries like Sweden and Poland, and there was Crimean War , which was, kind of, mini World War.

 

So, Russia might still have desire to achieve particular geopolitical goals, and geopolitical realities depend very little on dominant ideology of the nations involved.
