God bless them all - and the nation that gave them birth.

My family had two marines at Iwo Jima, both wounded and one earned the Silver star and the the the bronze star. Both were my great uncles, one of which died all to young due to complications of the wounds over time.

I have to admit that upon examination the strategic value of Iwo Jima to the Allies was supported by a somewhat tenuous argument. I have heard that five airmen were supposed to have been saved for every one soldier or Marine who died in that battle. Of course one must question how much confidence there can be that five (or three or four) airmen were indeed saved for every life expended on the ground there.

Maybe Iwo Jima's value was assessed in the light of an expected long campaign to subdue the home islands.

Could Iwo have been training giving Allied combat soldiers valuable experience in anticipation of Okinawa and the home islands campaigns?

Could we have made an unexpected move on, say Hokkaido, Shikoku or Kyushu skipping Okinawa and Iwo?
