Looking at this design one wonders if surface combatants will go the way of the Dodo. This one already looks like a sub.
A 14.500 ton destroyer, huh. Can somebody enlighten me on why this is not called a cruiser?

I suspect that it's not called a cruiser because when these missile magnets get sunk, the negative publicity won't be so bad if it's reported by the lamestream media as "just a destroyer."

Look at it this way: at least we don't have to name a carrier after that horrible president.

I'm happy to see others that believe surface combatants are obsolete.  I have a hard time explaining that in the future, sensors will determine the battle, and anything with a signature is very vulnerable.  Surface craft have far higher signatures than submersed craft, and not just on radar.

It was meant as a bit of a jest - it does look more like a sub then a traditional surfaceship though.

Tucci78    Yeah, but you call this a destroyer?   4/18/2012 8:26:42 AM

As such, destroyers were fleet auxiliaries, and in many navies they weren't even considered ships worthy of names.  When the torpedo boats became submersible, the destroyers took on the ASW function as well, and that's chiefly where they've functioned ever since, with some "maid of all work" jobs when exigencies arose.

This monstrosity is a capital ship in every imaginable way, designed and armed for shore bombardment.  It's a heavy cruiser in purpose and will be employed as such once it gets into operation. It will have to be escorted by destroyers and frigates to protect it.

When the hell does a "destroyer" require auxiliaries to protect it?  Simple. When it's not a "destroyer" at all.
