That traitorous bastard shouldn't have made it out of Afghanistan to begin with. With in a day or two of his getting captured a news report should have popped up telling of the discovery of his mangled carcass out in the desert.

Sehr gut, what ... oder sollte ich "was?" sagen? And before you start laughing at my German, I'll admit that it's been two years since I even touched it. Foreign languages are a graduation requirement in this country, not a life skill. Or, as the old joke goes: What do you call someone who speaks three languages? Answer: trilingual What do you call someone who speaks two languages? Answer: bilingual What do you call someone who speaks one language? Answer: American. Regarding the original issue, well, the U.S government decided not to pursue treason charges, so the point is kind of moot. I imagine he'll get locked up and forgotten about, and if he knows what's good for him, he should probably be content to leave it that way. As has been mentioned earlier on this thread, I believe, it probably wouldn't be too safe for him to show his face in ... well, a senior citizens' Bingo game, for starters. I know a lot of people both online and in the real world (which occasionally intrudes on my life) that were incredulous that we weren't trying him for treason. I think the end result will be the same, and even if he gets off Scot free and shaves his beard, he won't be welcome anywhere in this country ever again. He's more truly homeless than any of the bums sleeping under the stars on High Street at the moment. The bottom line is this: because of our Constitutional principles and the values embodied in the justice system of this country, we're giving him the benefits of a U.S. citizen even when we could have made an argument following the letter (but not the spirit) of the law effectively revoking his citizenship. The court of public opinion is another arena entirely, however, and I have a feeling the jury there has already made up its mind ... and is not about to get bought off by a high-priced, fast-talking lawyer. In all honesty, I don't the federal court will get bought off like that, either, but I'm merely saying that wiggling his way out of the courtroom might well mean getting out of the frying pan and into the fire. Either way, he's earned everything that's coming to him. --Phoenix Rising

Hon. Phoenix Rising; Eloquent and civilized. I hope your evaluation of the Justice Department's motive is correct. I suspect that Johnny Bin Walker can still find a place among the Muslim comunities in this country. I for one hope he is not permited the opportunity to walk a pair of Nike Airbus-sters into the history books. Respectfully Stuart Bradford Hinkle

Phoenix; Yup, different board, but we DID have the 'Johnny (bin-loser) towel-head' discussion. And I believe that 'what' aka 'jill' has made similar observations on the 'other' board. Very true on Americans and languages. we are pathetic. It's a shame we don't make language more important to our citizens. (of course such a small percentage of Americans ever have to deal with french, german, russian, etc. speaking peoples. we are in North America, not on 'The Continet' so our contact is vastly reduced - not to mention there are Americans who have never travelled beyond a few hundred miles of their own HOME much less the borders beyond of their nation! Now Spanish, theirs another problem altogether!) Loved the remark about 'did you learn your english on AOL'! My german was never great to start with; and i've not used it seriously since 1983, when I left Berlin. Thanks once again for your clearly reasoned and reasonable posts. always a pleasure to read. E.
