Subject: How will the axing of the manned component of FCS affect LAND 400?

I was under to impression that one of the reasons LAND 106 was retained and recently expanded, was that we were waiting for the manned component of FCS to become available. Now that this has been canned does that mean that we have upgraded our M-113's for nothing as if we replace them in the next decade we will be choosing from a range of vehicles that we could already have had in service? Looking outside the square the US Army will eventually need to replace its legacy Bradleys with something and considering that BAE now owns both the Bradley and the CV-90 while the ASCOD is now a GD product; which way would the US go?

The 30mm Bushmaster II that's already fitted on the CV90 (& USMC EFV) apparently is able to be easily converted to 40mm CTA.

 Not a 40mm CTA but you get the idea.

Frickin' awesome, that would defeat just about any target that we wanted it too while minimising collateral damange and as Raven said with Javalin to back it up it would be ideal! When can we get some of that 40mm action in 5 and 7 RAR?!?

I believe the 40mm CTA rounds don't take upmuch more volume than conventional 25 or 30mm rounds.

Correct. There is a good graphical representation of that in the link that I posted before.

A very favorite topic of mine, medium caliber AFV guns, especially the cased telescopic ammo.

 

For the record, the 30mm Bushmaster guns firing the NATO-standard 30x173mm family of rounds don't really "upgrade" to the 40 CTA round, but more a 40mm SuperShot, which retains many of the overall external dimensions of the 30x173 family, although technically the round now is 39mm in development, not 40mm...
 
A really impressive development (although not in the limelight currently), is that a few guns developed for the NATO-standard 35x228mm could "upgrade" to the 50mm Supershot ammo, although a bit longer than the 35's 228mm (I've see it suggested it could be as long as 330mm).
These guns were the Bushmaster 35/50, the Rheinmetall Rh503, and the South Afrikan EMAK 35.

And further digging on that NDIA site will reveal several articles over the years (search the various Guns, Rockets, and Missiles symposium entries) on the various medium caliber AFV guns under development, even mention of an anti-air round for that 40mm CTA gun based on Starstreak HVM MANPADS technology...
(there's development in the US of a guided 50mm round, even).
