Subject: Jaguar for Australia
Volkodav    8/14/2009 7:06:31 AM
During the late 60's and early 70's the RAAF used Avon Sabres as Lead In Fighter Trainers for the Mirage fleet. From this a requirement arose for a supersonic advanced trainer to replace the Sabres in this role. CAC developed the CA101 concept and the RAAF also looked at the SEPECAT Jaguar for the job with it being reported in Flight Magazine at the time that an order for 100 Jaguars was imminent. Assuming the RAAF got its 100 Jaguars for use as LIFT, Strike and Recce platforms what would this have done to the structure of the RAAF and what would the follow on effects have been through to today? My first thought is the RAAF would not have needed to specify a multi role fighter to replace the Mirage.

Radar absorbent material tiles in intakes and surface wave absorbant material sprayed onto the leading edges.

as before,  I seriously doubt the claims.

you'd need to see dry baseline to dry modified.  once its wet then its meaningless anyway
adding shockramps would have  greater impact (which is what the chinese did with their hybrid Lavi)
the single biggest reflector and signal transducer is the lumping great big skeg on the back.

have a look at http://sepecat.info/b/

plus the indians use "over and unders"

70% my arse. :)

Ah well my old boss believed them when they said they could make grease guns too.  I got sus at the 70% but all I could think of was the original RCS must have been huge leaving plenty of room for improvement.

I still like the Jag though and believe it would have been a usefull jet for the RAAF to have through the 80's, 90's and into the noughties.

Then again I am out of whack with RAAF thinking in that they want the greatest number of the best multi role platform they can get rather than a  mix of perfectly good enough jets supported by small silver bullet fighter and strike forces, i.e. a balanced and capable, as well as affordable force.  A sqn on the best fighter we can get a Sqn of the best strike platform we can get and 3 to 5 sqn of a good multi role type (maybe with an attack bent) to fill out the numbers and do 80 to 90% of required tasks without missing a beat would be the way to go in my opinion.

Look at the RAN for example, they will have a small number of high end AWD's, subs and amphibs, supported by larger numbers of GP Frigates, OPV/PB's, and amphib craft, to form a balanced, future proofed force.  If the RAN was run the same way as the RAAF they would be buying 6 Burkes and nothing else.
