This may be completely off base, but what about the Jedburgh teams? They were dropped way behind enemy lines, operated independently, destroyed enemy infrastructure, trained and organized indigenous troops, etc.
Sorry, I should know this, but you mentioned being in the regs in a earlier post. Is that the SAS? I am kind of confused...

yeah shit, i forgot the Jed's... and yes by the reg i meant the regiment (22 SAS). used to be anyway. that was living life properly, feel a bit out of place nowadays. it was nothin like civy life... you start to feel a bit a awkward after life in the spec's. oh well. now i spend my time working with a group called Combat systems research inc. doing tests on rifles, shotguns, u know... small arms stuff. mainly what we do is break the guns down into specs. a lot of times publishers like janes ask for our assistance. our latests customer was jane's guns recognition guide by i. Hogg and somebody Gander or something like that, it was published by collins. good factual book apparently

Missions akin to modern special forces were carried out far before Romans by
professionals
: Spartans often sent small detachments of specialists under an ex-Colonel and ex-General to whip their less war-like allies into shape. The success of Syracuse against Athens in Peloponesian War is credited to one such Spartan detachment. Similar forces would probably have been deployed by Ancient Chinese and Indians and others we have no records of (or I am not familiar with
). Incidentally neither Roman Praetorians nor German storm-troopers would qualify as special forces - granted both were certainly elite and engaged occassionally in special missions.

It certainly would qualify, but would be superceeded by Brandenburgers on Nazi side in terms of strict chronology.
PS: I am assuming LRDG, ILRS, SAS, Popski's, Devil's Brigade etc are disqualified for not meeting the "trained and organized indigenous troops" clause, and MKVD SOE OSS etc are disqualified for being intel services.

This has got to be either A) bs or B) some kind of code known within the 22nd SAS or SOF community. I am on to you, Mough...I'm still trying to figure out what nationality you are...I am guessing Canadian now.
