Join the para's and you will become a light-role infantry soldier with a big attitude, while if you join the RM's you will go through the Commando course to do the job of a light-role infantry soldier.

Unless jumping out of aircraft or the thought of the Commando course gives you a serious hard-on, why not just join the Infantry?

My point is, if you join the RM's or para's, "just another infantry soldier", is exactly what you will be.  On operations such as in Afghanistan or Iraq you will do near exactly the same job.

Jumping out of aircraft or off rigid raiders may be very sexy, but it's less than 1% of the job of being an infantry soldier.  The British army has many famous infantry regiments, of which the para's are very junior.  As for marines, army regiments have been undertaking the role long before the formation of 3 Cmdo Brigade.  In army infantry you can do the light role thing, or you can be mechanised or armoured, and play with Bulldog/Mastiff or Warrior.  Warrior gives an infantry battalion a Hell of a lot more fighting power than any para or RM battalion will wield.

If you want to be "elite", join a good infantry regiment, do well, and get into support company and play with recce platoon, or SF guns platoon, or mortar platoon or whatever floats your boat.  Go into 1 Rifles and you can even do the all arms commando course if you want to walk around with the dagger.

I understand what your saying but the royal marines conduct ops behind enemy lines, they yomp everywhere. The paras do the same and have a recce group called the pathfinders who mark dz's and lz's for the maun forces to arrive. They can be inserted up to a week or two before the actual invasion takesplace. What other infantry regiment can offer a career like that. Also if you can get a stint in the pathfinders you are half way to joining the sas.

Most people don't make it into the Paras or Royals any way so talking about the PF's nevermind SAS is getting way way ahead of your self...concentrate on the 25 before the 250 young padawan

Most people prefer not to die...it's kind of ruins the experience

Klrm, the SAS and SBS are both part of UKSF, and anyone in the armed forces, from the navy, army or air-force are eligable to try for them.  If you join the RM's, you can go on and ask to join the SAS.
