When I read this I thought of the oddball special ops types the British military threw up from time to time, or our own Mickey Marcus' work* with what would soon be the Israeli Army in British Palestine, or our own troops who, refusing to surrender, kept fighting in the Philippines. Also the Chindits in Burma, Merrill's "Marauders" and (post war) UK jungle operations against insurgents in Malaya.

How about US Marines in Nicaragua?

Good to know that average US combat troops are above average.

It's truly sad that we have such a BELOW mediocre CIC in charge of our military.

it is so vital that ANY presidential candidate have some kind of military experience, no matter what it was.

Non-veterans tend to have a secret contempt for veterans and the military.

The CIA is a covert operations entity whose mission is the gathering of general intelligence. Some of what they gather has military value, but not all, as most of their data is political/economic/industrial in nature and has little tactical application.

Also- the CIA is a more strategically-focused branch whose intel is used for more big-picture use.

Actioning on their intel could compromise their assets and render useless long-held relationships or sources.

I would also like to take note that Spec Ops were often not liked because they used a significant amount of very scarce assets such as helicopters, gunships , etc. etc. Leaving less for conventional warfare. And they do require many more assets than imagined.

I would argue the move to special forces is due to the growing distaste for casualties and desire to use less troops.

U.S is still losing wars, but not as spectacularly as it did in Vietnam. This lowers the political cost of failed wars.
