Greatest generals of the ancient mediteranean? If it is a world list, Gengis Kahn should certainly be in there. ...Unless the 13th century is insufficiently ancient...

I was thinking too, that the list seems pretty Eurocentric. Alexander the Great was certainly "Great" due to the vastness of the empire he was able to conquer in such a short time, and the personal leadership he displayed in leading his forces, but if he's on the list, then Genghis Khan definitely deserves mention as well.

Lets see...
1)Genghis Khan - United the Mongols, conquered everything.
2)Attila the Hun - The Scourge of God, need to say more?
3)Hannibal Barca - Punic war god.
4)Scipio Africanus - Hannibal´s doom.
5)
Philip II of Macedon - He made Alexander´s profesional army a reality.
6)Alexander the Great - Fulfilled his father dreams.
7)Espartacus - Oh yes, not Kirk Douglas... this one lead the slaves revolt against the Romans and made them suffer hell.

Well, the same as you I limited myself to the ROMAN age... or was it permited to add some medieval generals???

adios

Alexander...He was the only one who was undefeated and he did it with one army. Africanus only won one battle..against Hannibal.and he had three other Roman armies with him.The mongols and the Huns were were eventualy defeated and driven back. Caeser was good but his was only one contribution to the Roman empire, which all their leaders contributed to. Hannibal was very good.
Alexander was the only one to win in India until the British, millenia later. Alexander was Caesers and Napoleans idol.
Phillip was certainly important because he gave his son the tools to conquer.

1. Alexander, everyone else thinks so and have done for 2,500 years
after that take your choice from all those mentioned plus Julian the Apostate, Constantine the Great and Porphyrogenitus, Pompey, Marius, Seleukos Nicator, Li Shih Min, the guy who founded the Han dynasty, Genghis Khan (who is Kwarezm - about half of China, his generals did the rest). Trajan, Chandra? Indian guy, Charlemagne, Iphicrates, Cyrus the Great, Darius I, Basil the Bulgarbasher, Heraclius, Khalid ibn abi al Whalid etc.etc. depends what the criteria for 'best' and 'general' are.
