i've decided to lighten the mood a little here, try some of these questions on for size 1.) if one=3, two=3, three=5, and four=4... what does five + six =??? 2.) take me from there, and i end up here... what am i? 3.) bill and ben go down to the beach to collect sea shells. They take one bag with them. How many shells can they put in the empty bag? 4.) Before Sir Rihard Burton attempted to discover the source of the Nile, which was the world's longest river? 5.) what does a zamboni do during half-time in a game of ice hockey? we'll leave it at that for now

Barring eye gouging, iris sampling and pre-cognitive paintings:

If there is one person with purple eyes, he looks around the circular table at breakfast, sees that no one else has purple eyes, concludes that therefore he must be the only one with purple eyes, and promptly kills himself.

If there are two people with purple eyes, they both look around the circular table at breakfast and see one person with purple eyes, they will each assume that this one other person will kill themselves. When this other person has not killed themselves by breakfast on the second day, the first person realises that the only explanation for the other not killing themselves must be if they too can see someone with purple eyes, the first person realises that they are that someone, and both people kill themselves.

Three days for three purple-eyed people, four days for four.... and so on.

And that people, is why there are no purple eyed people around today.

I like that one since it demands both logic and a certain amount of empathy - for lack of a better word - you have to put yourself in their shoes to get it correct, not many people are good at both logic and shoe-swapping.

I changed it slightly to make it difficult to google, which may have made it seem harder.

*=Unless he assumes that he too doesn't have purple eyes

If there are two people with purple eyes, they both look around the circular table at breakfast and see one person with purple eyes, they will each assume that this one other person will kill themselves. When this other person has not killed themselves by breakfast on the second day, the first person realises that the only explanation for the other not killing themselves must be if they too can see someone with purple eyes, the first person realises that they are that someone*, and both people kill themselves.

*=How does the purple eyed person assume this and not all the other people?

Three days for three purple-eyed people, four days for four.... and so on.

This answer is wrong and you must die!

And that people, is why there are no purple eyed people around today.

Liz Taylor is well known for purple eyes

Apparantly so.
"And that people, is why there are no purple eyed people around today."

Because some chief order his people to not communicate?  Sounds like an evolutionary dead end.

He knows that someone has purple eyes otherwise why would the tribal chief order suicide? He can see that no one else around the table has purple eyes so it must be himself.

If there are two people with purple eyes, they both look around the circular table at breakfast and see one person with purple eyes, they will each assume that this one other person will kill themselves. *=How does the purple eyed person assume this and not all the other people?

Because on day two he looks around the table and sees that there is only one other person with purple eyes, therefore the second person with purple eyes must be him.

The other non-purple-eyed-people can see two people with purple eyes, so they wait two days for them to commit suicide, and therefore don't kill themselves. If there are three people it will take three days for all to come to the realisation.... etc.

Three days for three purple-eyed people, four days for four.... and so on.

Yes you are right. I see that now. Sorry. I find it hard to get into the 'keen to die for the king' mindset.
