Subject: Fourth Plinth in Trafalgar Square

So I see the headline on a blog and I think "I bet all the entries are from a bunch of multicultural and leftist jackasses." Sure enough I click the link and see that's what it is. I'll go them one better. Put a statue of a jihadi cutting off John Bull's head. You would think the statue would be of Bomber Harris, Churchill, or something good about GREAT Britain. Sad to see what's happening to your country. I hope the UK does a 180 and solves its problems.

Sorry Earlm, but the "bunch of multicultural and leftist jackasses" are here to stay, well at least for a while anyway.

My personal choice would be for either a statue of Andrew Cunningham, he would fit in well alongside Nelson or Isambard Kingdom Brunel.

ABC would be an excellent choice

Have they had a hit since the mid 80's?

Yeah, I too guessed it would be a load of meaning free rubbish... and was right.

But look here:

h*tp://commentisfree.guardian.co.uk/open_thread/2008/01/a_square_deal.html

And remember this is the Guardian, the bastion of the current establishment....

Number one suggestion by readers of the article is a giant c0ck.

Number two is Charles Darwin.

All is not lost. :-)

meh

In London there are thousands of statues, monuments, etc,. to great warriors, monarchs, poets, engineers, leaders, scientists et al

So  I don't begrudge the loony brigade their moment in the sun!

How about the cigar chomper, Churchill, or does he have one already?

Or an RAF Spitfire?

Kind of drives home what Britain means to the modern world, as in we wouldn't be here, if Britain failed?

Spitfire would be good but the "don't offend anyone brigade" would be dead set against it so it would need overwhelming public support... which I think it would get against those others pictured (that would be an easy petition for any government to pass which costs nothing and makes them look on the side of the people) ...   perhaps Blue Peter could run a competition....... socks anybody...  :-)

Padfoot there can never be enough monuments to great people such as Andrew Cunningham or Isambard Kingdom Brunel.

Interestingly the Nazis had plans to relocate Nelsons column to Berlin had they conquered Britain in WWII (Norman Longmate in If Britain Had Fallen 1972).

Didn't realise that a while ago they turfed over the whole square for two days as part of a Campaign for "Green Spaces"

Take a look, I think that this should be done permanently! It brings  some colour to the whole  place!

Britain has had many, many great men, and women, throughout its long and illustrious history.

If you were to do a list of "Great Britons" it would probably be longer than that of a similar list from any other country.

I propose putting a statue of Wellington on the empty plinth in Trafalgar Square, if he hasn't got a statue anywhere else in London.

Other contenders for the plinth?  How about Charles Darwin, or William Shakespeare, or Isaac Newton, or Charles Dickens or Sir Francis Drake, or Florence Nightingale (nursed sick and injured British soldiers in the Crimean War), or Edward Elgar (composer), or William Caxton (the inventor of the printing press), or Edward Jenner (pioneer of vaccination), or Charles Babbage (computer pioneer), or Sir Ernest Shackleton?

Wrong. He was the first person to introduce it to England. The Printing Press was invented in Germany by Johann Gutenberg.

And for Goodness sake, will you ever give it a rest?!?

Would rather have a statue of  Mary Seacole than Florance Nightingale.
