Which of these two birds would have the edge if they were pitted against each other in combat? Ozzy

They would both fly around as blind as bats on most missions, run out of fuel then go home. There would be no point turning their radars on, because that would just give the illuminator's position away(they both have good directional capaiblity on their EW suite) without actually detecting the target. On the off chance that the F-22 got close enough I'd bet on the F-35's IRST picking it up, despite IR radiation reduction. However, since the F-35 would have to use short-range IRM's(AMRAAM's wouldn't lock on) to engage and since it is hard to do that from anywhere but head on with a supercruising F-22, The latter would probably just fly on by. The final possiblity is that they get close enough for a visual ID, then go at each other with guns or IRM's. The F-35 is likely to get first visual pickup because of its smaller size, so I'd probably give it the advantage so long as it was in a position to catch the supercruising F-22. Alternatively, the F-35 could just hit the F-22's airfield with its greater range of air to ground ordinance and better air to ground targetting suite. If it were an F-35B it could even fly-off a forward strip thus avoiding retaliation.

why would you think that a fight between what is a pre-eminent air superiority asset against a strike asset a useful comparison?

"why would you think that a fight between what is a pre-eminent air superiority asset against a strike asset a useful comparison?" Because lots of people are going to be using the F-35's as their pre-eminent air superiority asset and US customers sometimes end up being their enemies. In any case, why do you think that anything that we discuss here useful?;-)

Stealth is not invisibility.

" In any case, why do you think that anything that we discuss here useful?;-)" caveat emptor - ask and ye shall receive! there's always rare gems and nuggets to be found if one is patient and patient and patient..... what was the question again?

Advantage F-22 assuming a flight of them is already stationed on CAP. No doubt the F-35 signature profile, which will have been thoroughly mapped, will be stored in the F-22’s recognition library. The reverse almost certainly will not hold true. The F-22 flight will operate from a higher altitude conveying favorable emission angles and share its collaborative synched return data from hopping AESA against the superior threat library. Non-export late model AMRAAMs (US only) should be able to guide on F-35 once they are close enough to go active. The F-35’s best chance will arise when the F-22s are tanking, climbing rapidly, or sitting on the tarmac but that’s about it. Yes, I stayed at a Holiday Inn last night … v^2

"Which of these two birds would have the edge if they were pitted against each other in combat?" The F-35 may have the stealth edge as the F-22 is 3rd generation stealth & the F-35 is 4th generation stealth. http://www.afa.org/magazine/April2006/0406raptor.asp

The F-35 supposedly skimps on a lot of the exotic materials and manufacturing processes which give the F-22 its high class stealth...while also making it a pain in the ass to make and expensive as hell.

"while also making it a pain in the ass to make and expensive as hell." There has been a learning curve. Best practices have been realized through the F-22 program & subsequently incorporated into the JSF program.

Pity the poor ol’ B-2, as she has such a large airframe to hide and “mere” 2G stealth. F-35 customers will shame our B-2 fleet mercilessly with constant harassment during joint exercises. v^2
