Subject: Any one remember Harpoon, the wargame? Air strike on Iran.
scooterfan    6/22/2008 9:36:08 AM
Lets see the a country located between the ___ pennisula and Syria want to launch a coordinated strike towards targets to the east. Will they need forces to take out low level radars or can they just co in and do the job? How about return refueling? Can a side topic be launched on the political ramifications and can we just stick to the op orders here? Probably not, but let it roll.

Blurred nature of offense vs. defense...

I think one consequence of the IAF drill was to put it on the table that somebody was going to have to supply permissive airspace, one way or the other.  If they can fly right over Iraq, and why not, operate through the coalition's airspace permissively, it increases their chances of success, I should think.  Or, maybe they did so well drilling and refueling that everyone thinks they will prefer to take the long way round.

Question:  Any chance of allied or otherwise joint support?  Other nations fear Iran.  KSA for example, if they felt like it, could probably help, they have the right equipment, F-15s, E-3s, right?

Question:  how big is the strike?  It will affect matters.  Certainly the duration of the campaign.

Israeli tactics?  SF infiltration and CAS on Silkworm sites, air defenses, infrastructure?  Assassinations?

Note:  This will cost the earth.

Never had a chance to try the board game, but I may be forced too.  Hard as copies are to find in the states, it's pretty damn near impossible here in Mongolia.  However, there are computers with old OS's to run it.

Interesting point was made in another section(armed forces of the world), on the difficulties in allowing overflight of Iraq.  Re. Iraqi sovereignity issues if the US allows overflight without permission of the government.

I'm not advocating the strike one way or another, but anxious to try the scenario.  Don't think I would want to fly the strike though.
