Subject: Would the F-35, if submitted as a bid, have won India's MRCA competition?
Clouded Leopard    6/8/2011 10:06:18 PM
Pros and cons: On the plus side, the F-35's stealth and avionics package would most likely have given it the upper hand, slightly, against every other fighter in the competition. On the downside, its cost would have been tremendously high, and its delivery would also have been delayed - India might not receive its F-35s until well after 2020 or later.

I'm terribly sorry guys. For some reason, my thread ended up triple-posting.

Maybe a mod can delete the redundant glitch threads?

It happens, basically when you submit a post it will say it's failed and at that point you know it's worked ; )

I think the thing is, they needed mature units for the evaluation and the prototypes wouldn't have been ready in time.. Unless you mean "a bit further down the line in development" in which case it's hard to see why anyone wouldn't opt for the 5th generation article if given the choice, there would also be issues pertaining to TOT etc.. which is a key part of the deal..

The F-35 never was a serious option for the IAF for multiple reasons. The current entry into service date is already quite late and a fair deal later than what the IAF would have liked to see. The F-35 wouldn't be available on time and the IAF can't afford to wait much longer at all. Additionally the Indians require local assembly of the selected type and it's questionable whether the US would have allowed this and if yes it would hardly have been on time. The more than likely like of any meaningful ToT and possible restrictions wrt the use of the aircraft and the fact that LM would have struggled to demonstrate two aircraft for the field trials between 2009 and 2010 and the likely inability to demonstrate weapons releases as has been demanded by the IAF all mean that the F-35 wouldn't have had a chance at all.

If the Indians were turned off by the side agreements that came with the US legacy jets, just imagine how they would react to even more stringent restrictions that would be inherent in any F-35 acquisition.
